Courage Community Initiative

Collaboration by people from all walks of life so everyone can eat.

The Courage initiative in Hout Bay is an unprecedented collaboration between business people and community organisations. It is not just raising significant funds, it is managing a centralized, accountable food supply chain system that is currently feeding thousands of people every day in the town. This volunteer model has proved it is sustainable and can last way beyond the current Covid-19 crisis. It can easily be rolled out in other suburbs across South Africa.

How it started

Change began as a drive to feed hungry people in a crisis. It soon became clear that the large numbers of NGOs, schools, sports clubs, community groups and churches already working to feed people in Hout Bay during the Covid-19 crisis would achieve much more if they worked alongside experts in business who could help them secure a continuous donation of food to distribute. Aside from continuity of supply, business experts can provide secure storage for perishable and non-perishable stocks and can build and run data bases that identify and track needy families, get them food regularly and stop unnecessary duplication. Ultimately, it also allows complete transparency and accountability for all donations. This means that community organisations are freed up to do what they do best – distribute to their needy beneficiaries.

What Courage model achieves

For NGOs and community organisations it brings expertise, governance and reach that one NGO cannot achieve on its own.

For donors the model lends credibility and confidence as everything is tracked and accounted for. Donor tax benefits are made easy to receive.

For beneficiaries it gives peace of mind that there is a trustworthy system in place that will deliver food regularly. They have no reason to panic about where their next meal is coming from.

Courage fundraising and food delivery rate

Courage has raised R6.5m of a R30m target. These funds are used to buy food which is then sorted into food parcels. Each parcel feed a family of four for two weeks.

Current delivery rate to the community if 500-700 parcels a day.

The aim is to maintain this daily rate of delivery in Hout Bay for the next two months and if possible until September.
