The Angel Starfish Educare Centre opened in August 2009 to provide affordable day care and pre-school education for children from disadvantaged backgrounds in Hout Bay, Cape Town, South Africa.  The centre is situated in the Sijonga Phambeli Community Education Centre which is located on the edge of the Imizamo Yethu Township. The majority of the children attending the centre live in Imizamo Yethu.

Through the real spirit of “UBUNTU”, this centre plays host to the real Angels of Hout Bay showing how true they are as community providers who work together with others for the greater good.

The Courage Initiative, through its partnership with Love in a Bowl, salutes these angels. These Mamas are mostly working tirelessly in Educares, Youth Development Programmes, Elderly Care and Health Services. Our Love in a Bowl veggies are delivered to 28 of these community programmes. The Angel Starfish Project, is a registered ECD with a capacity for 120 children. Of course, during these COVID times, all programmes have to operate with smaller numbers.

The Angel Starfish Project makes it very easy for us to continue providing through our partnership with Love in a Bowl, as they are devoted making sure that their children receive good nutrition as well as benefit from every deed of love shown to them.  

We simply love the story about how their name actually came about.  The Archbishop Desmond Tutu told the founders back in 2005 at an UBUNTU conference: A young boy saw an old gentleman painstakingly throwing hundreds of starfish that had washed ashore, back into the sea. The boy mocked him telling him that he was wasting his time because there were hundreds of them and that it was too big a job. The old man took a step back from his work and replied, “But it matters very much to the one that you throw back in”. And thus their starfish name.

We love the Courageous Angels of Hout Bay who keep our young, little people happy!
